Hospital to Begin Building New Facility
Construction is expected to begin next week on a 25,000 square-foot building at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center designed to replace a structure that was destroyed in the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
When the $6.8-million North Building opens next September, officials hope they will finally be able to vacate the 12 trailers that have been in use for nearly seven years. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has earmarked $2.1 million toward construction costs, with the balance coming from the hospital and its foundation.
The new one-story building will house a new outpatient rehabilitation facility and various administrative offices and a new medical library.
Built in 1961, the 257-bed hospital sustained severe damage in both the 1971 and 1994 earthquakes. Its structure has been rebuilt and interiors updated.
