Free Houses Make Good Homes, Down the Road

If you can move them, you can have them.

Legacy Partners is offering six free buildings to qualified individuals who can move them. The developer also will consider negotiating cash bonuses based on their demolition savings.

The buildings are on campus or near the site of the former Ambassador College in Pasadena.

Because the buildings have been altered extensively in their lifetimes, the developer said adaptive reuse is not a viable option.

* Library: 11,837 square feet, built in 1896. This three-story mansion was the first building for Ambassador College. Extensive 1922 remodeling was done by architect Myron Hunt, who designed the Pasadena Central Library and the Huntington Hotel.

* Library annex: 4,342 square feet, built in 1899. Originally the carriage house for the library.

* Victorian home: 1,822 square feet, built in 1893. This two-bedroom, 11/2-bathroom Queen Anne Victorian home could be used as a guest house or studio.

* Television facility: 17,971 square feet, built in 1895. The former residence was most recently used as a television production studio and office building.

* South Orange Grove Apartments: 33,768 square feet, built in 1950. These 19 apartment units were the first multifamily residences built along Pasadena’s “Millionaires’ Row” on Orange Grove.

* Olcott Mansion: 5,669 square feet, built in 1887. This mansion, the oldest building on the Ambassador campus, has been used as a single-family home, offices and a dormitory.
