Edwards Huntington Metcalf; Library Benefactor

Edwards Huntington Metcalf, 89, Pepperdine University board member and benefactor of the library and gardens founded by his grandfather, railroad tycoon Henry E. Huntington. Metcalf became president of Huntington Land Co. and owned and operated several small businesses. He gave liberally to the Huntington Library, Art Gallery and Botanical Gardens, which were founded by his grandfather on his San Marino estate. Metcalf shared his ancestor’s love of rare books, becoming an avid collector and owner of one of the most comprehensive T.E. Lawrence collections in the world. Metcalf, who served as a Navy officer, was a past president of the San Marino Taxpayers’ Assn. and in 1986 ran unsuccessfully for the San Marino City Council. On Monday in Sierra Madre.
