Valley Trauma Center Opens Counseling Site in Mission Hills

An office that will provide free and low-cost counseling to victims of sexual assault and their families will open Saturday in the northeast San Fernando Valley.

The new Mission Hills office will become the third branch of the state- and federally funded Valley Trauma Center, which already has locations in Van Nuys and Santa Clarita.

A $150,000 state grant allowed the organization to open the Mission Hills office, said trauma center spokeswoman Jean Morrison.

“We conducted a three-month study and realized there was a need for an office in this location because transportation is a big problem,” Morrison said.

The Valley Trauma Center annually responds to more than 500 crisis calls in an area that spans 460 square miles, Morrison said.

A paid staff of 25 and about 100 volunteers provide such services as bilingual crisis and follow-up counseling, preventive education and a 24-hour hotline.

The new Mission Hills office is at 11541 Laurel Canyon Blvd. For more information, call (818) 756-5330.
