Newport’s Glaser Sails to Second Place

Pease Glaser of Newport Harbor Yacht Club finished second in the Women’s Match Race Invitational for the Bettina Betts Memorial Trophy Sunday off Newport Beach.

Glaser, a 2000 Olympic silver medalist in the 470 class and a co-owner of the Ullman Sails loft in Newport Beach, won 13 consecutive races to win the round-robin portion of the four-day competition and advance to Sunday’s final against Karen Johnson of Kitsilano Yacht Club of Vancouver, Canada.

Glaser and crew Beth Marangola and Ruth Paulling, a former UC Irvine sailor, lost the final race of the best-of-three final by seven seconds.

Dawn Riley, a three-time America’s Cup competitor from San Francisco, defeated Newport Harbor Yacht Club’s Casey Hogan and crew Erin Collins and Gretchen Loufek for third place.

WIFFLE BALL

Rain washed out all the Little League baseball games in Costa Mesa Saturday, but die-hard Wiffle ball players got in their swings at the Golden State Challenge.

Bill Owens, tournament organizer and player for the runner-up LongShotz, said they played through the precipitation because players had traveled from as far away as Atlanta.

“Early in the day it was miserable,” said Owens, who lives in Costa Mesa. “Everybody was raw. Guys were seen wearing heavy coats and gloves.”

The rain let up by the afternoon, but it remained windy and cold for the semifinals and final. The Ventura-based A Bros defeated the LongShotz, 10-1, in the championship game.

K.A.O.S. of Anaheim finished fifth.

The next local U.S. Perforated Plastic Baseball Assn. event is April 21 at Tommy Lasorda Jr. Fieldhouse in Yorba Linda. Details: (626) 854-6903.

PRO SURFING

The Assn. of Surfing Professionals 2001 World Championship Tour season got off to an interesting start Wednesday at Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia.

The marquee matchup of the Rip Curl Pro first round: 2000 world champion Sunny Garcia vs. Kelly Slater, the semi-retired six-time world champion.

Adding to the intrigue was the fact that Garcia has a torn ligament in his knee that his doctor said should keep him inactive for eight weeks. But Garcia surfed anyway and handily defeated Slater and Luke Hitchings to advance to the third round.

Prepare for the rematch. Early today, Slater eliminated Rob Machado in the second-chance second round to set up a third-round heat against Garcia.
