A stuntman was seriously injured in an ill-timed explosion during the production of a television show at the Los Angeles County Raceway in Palmdale on Tuesday, authorities said.

The 44-year-old man, whose name was not released, was driving about 60 mph toward a ramp when the explosion occurred about 5:30 p.m., said Capt. Brian Jordan, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The car he was driving flipped over.

“We don’t know if [the timing of the explosion] was early or late,” Jordan said.

The man, who suffered a head injury, was airlifted to Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills, where he was in serious condition, a nursing supervisor said.

Authorities did not know the names of the production company or the television show being filmed at the raceway at 6850 E. Avenue T.

Because special effects were involved in the accident, the state fire marshal will investigate the accident, Jordan said. Cal/OSHA is charged with investigating workplace injuries on movie and television sets.
