New West Symphony concertmistress Elizabeth Pitcairn will make her solo debut with the orchestra when its season continues this weekend in Thousand Oaks and Oxnard. Pitcairn will be featured in Mendelssohn’s romantic Violin Concerto. More program highlights: Weber’s overture to “Oberon” and Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra.

Jazz

The 20-piece Societe swing band will appear Saturday at the Ventura High School auditorium to stage the same program performed at Benny Goodman’s legendary 1938 Carnegie Hall concert. The fund-raiser will also include a performance by Cabrillo Middle School’s Perseverance Hall Jass Band, an ensemble featuring musicians 10 to 14 years old. Both bands are directed by Randolph Siple. Proceeds benefit the music program at Cabrillo Middle School.

Stage

The Ojai Valley Library Friends and Foundation will present the fifth annual Ojai “Shorts” on Saturday at the Matilija School auditorium. Actors from the Ojai area will read light literary selections, including Garrison Keillor’s humorous “The Midlife Crisis of Dionysus.” Emcee James Lashly will be joined by Peter Bellwood, Kim Maxwell-Brown, Leigh Curran, John Diehl, Wortham Krimmer, Doug Motel, Peter Strauss, John Perry, Dmitri Corbin and Robin Strasser. Proceeds benefit the Ojai, Oak View and Meiners Oaks libraries.

Festival

Cal Lutheran University will present its 28th annual Scandinavian Festival at Kingsmen Park this weekend. The popular celebration of Nordic culture offers traditional dancing and music, craft vendors, theatrical performances, food, a Scandinavian marketplace, Tivoli Gardens and a 16th century Swedish royal court. New for this year is a visual lesson on Norwegian life by artist Anita Mason, who specializes in constructing miniature villages. Mason’s renderings depict Norwegian life from the Stone Age to the 20th century.
