Seeking Mideast Peace

* I was very impressed with “One Israeli Who Lost a Son Fights for Peace” (April 17), about Yitzhak Frankenthal, who has a clear vision of peace for the troubled Holy Land, the only realistic view of how to achieve it and has taken the first steps to reach that goal. Not only do many Israelis and Palestinians hope that the fighting there will end, but many Americans do too. Rightly so. The Middle East is a far more volatile area than, say, the Taiwan Strait. Now that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is pouring fuel on the fire, no one can predict how far it will spread.

* Re “Israel Seizes Land in Gaza, Pulls Out After U.S. Rebuke,” April 18: The U.S. has shown itself as the protector of the weak and defenseless Palestinians. Let us hope that this message is understood throughout the Middle East.
