Winnie McWaters; Longtime County Resident

Winnie L. McWaters, a resident of Ventura County for 64 years, has died at the age of 90.

McWaters, who died Wednesday after a brief illness, was born June 8, 1910, in Vernon, Texas. She moved to Ventura in 1937.

Her hobby was making clothes for dolls distributed by the Salvation Army’s Toy and Joy Shop. Family members said she enjoyed making people happy at Christmas, dressing more than 500 dolls that were given away. She also enjoyed quilting and over the years made a quilt for each member of her family.

McWaters was a member of the Grace Baptist Church of Ventura and the Walking Club at the Pacific View Mall.

Her husband, Ross L. McWaters, died in 1988.

She is survived by her daughter, Jerry Bennett of Ventura; her son, Dwayne McWaters of Ventura; twin brother Wayne Goss of Anaheim; sisters Esta Stringer and Marie Dawson, both of Texas; five grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.

Funeral services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Cliff Howery of the Grace Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura.
