CHARTING THE LEAD: A look at the Lakers’ lead or deficit by the minute

Share

FIRST QUARTER

PORTLAND 19

LAKERS 30

Highlight Reel: The Lakers’ Shaquille O’Neal often looks like a man among boys and somehow he made Portland’s 300-pound Arvydas Sabonis look small when he drove baseline and in one motion dunked with Sabonis on his back.

It’s Not in the Box Score: Once O’Neal gets going, Portland simply doesn’t have an answer and Trail Blazer big men know it. They had helpless looks on their faces every time they found themselves trying to defend the Laker center solo near the basket.

Winning Numbers: 12, 6, 5. The total points, shots attempted and made and rebounds from the Lakers’ Horace Grant in the quarter.

Wrong Number: 5:41. The amount of time Sabonis was on the floor before he had to leave the game with two fouls.

Leading Scorers: Lakers: Grant 12, Derek Fisher 9. Trail Blazers: Rasheed Wallace 12, Steve Smith 3.

Leading Rebounders: Lakers: O’Neal and Grant 4. Trail Blazers: Damon Stoudamire and Wallace 3.

SECOND QUARTER

PORTLAND 48

LAKERS 51

Highlight Reel: Moments after the quarter ended, Wallace picked up a technical foul for exploding at Bill Spooner when the official told him if he had played better there wouldn’t be a problem.

It’s Not in the Box Score: How veteran reserves Stacey Augmon and Rod Strickland, who combined for 15 points in the quarter, helped the Trail Blazers erase an 11-point deficit by sparking them to a 15-2 run to start the quarter.

Winning Numbers: 15 and 52.6. The total rebounds and shooting percentage of the Trail Blazers in the quarter as they outscored the Lakers, 29-21.

Wrong Number: Zero. Total baskets made by Laker shooting guard Kobe Bryant, who finished the half 0 for 7 from the floor.

Leading Scorers: Lakers: Derek Fisher 8, Brian Shaw 4. Trail Blazers: Strickland 8, Augmon 7.

Leading Rebounders: Lakers: Shaw, Grant and O’Neal 2. Trail Blazers: Sabonis 5, Wallace and Strickland 3.

THIRD QUARTER

PORTLAND 72

LAKERS 74

Highlight Reel: O’Neal showed that when the “Big Dog” has had enough, he fights back. After being pushed and shoved for much of the quarter, O’Neal picked up a flagrant foul when he slammed Sabonis into Bryant, forcing both players to fall to the floor.

It’s Not in the Box Score: When Wallace gets on a roll, the Lakers have problems and the Trail Blazer forward did whatever he wanted against veteran Robert Horry by scoring 12 points in the quarter.

Winning Number: 17. Bryant (10 points) and O’Neal (seven) showed why they are the best one-two punch in the league by combining for this amount of points in the quarter.

Wrong Number: Five. Combined total scored by Portland’s starting backcourt of Steve Smith and Stoudamire.

Leading Scorers: Lakers: Bryant 10, O’Neal 7. Trail Blazers: Wallace 12, Sabonis 6.

Leading Rebounders: Lakers: O’Neal 9. Trail Blazers: Scottie Pippen 4.

FOURTH QUARTER

PORTLAND 93

LAKERS 106

Highlight Reel: The Lakers’ role players took over to start the quarter when Rick Fox and Brian Shaw knocked down back-to-back three-pointers, then Fox followed with a steal from Augmon and scored on a layup to stretch the lead to 10 points.

It’s Not in the Box Score: After the Lakers broke open a tight game at the start of the quarter, Staples Center fans took it to a different level when a woman exposed herself on the video screen during a timeout.

Winning Numbers: 15 and zero. Consecutive points scored by the Lakers at the start of the quarter and the amount of points scored by the Trail Blazers during the same stretch.

Wrong Number: Zero. Points scored by Wallace in the quarter after having 24 during the first three.

Leading Scorers: Lakers: Bryant 15, O’Neal 7. Trail Blazers: Stoudamire 10, Smith 4.

Leading Rebounders: Lakers: O’Neal 4; Devean George, Fox and Bryant 2. Trail Blazers: Antonio Harvey 3; Wallace, Sabonis and Dale Davis 1.
