3 False Alarms Disrupt Travel on Red Line

Reports of an assault suspect on the loose and a possible bomb planted on a subway, topped off by a fire alarm, disrupted service on the Red Line subway Monday night, interrupting travel for hundreds of commuters.

Police officers and firefighters responded to three emergency calls between 5 p.m. and 7:45 p.m., diverting many subway riders to buses. All of the alarms proved to be false.

About 7:30 p.m., police responded to the stop at Vermont Avenue and Sunset Boulevard to look for a possible assault suspect, said Officer Jason Lee. Even as several officers headed into the subway, hundreds of passengers headed up to board MTA buses because of an earlier smoke alarm.

Police did not find a suspect or victim, Lee said. And the fire alarm proved to be false.

Then police got a call about black boxes at the Pershing Square part of the subway. They may have been devices to prevent vandals from damaging the fire extinguishers there, Officer Lee said.
