Crowds Protest New Bombing at Vieques
Puerto Ricans mobilized for massive protests to prevent the Navy from bombing its Vieques island range, after a federal judge ruled that the military exercises could resume.
In San Juan, the capital, thousands of people waving blue-and-white Vieques flags gathered for an anti-Navy rally.
Navy officials said ships would resume shelling the eastern tip of Vieques this morning.
Protesters occupied the area, preventing exercises until they were removed by U.S. marshals in May. Under a deal with the White House, scaled-back exercises using only inert ammunition are allowed.
