FRESHWATER

Los Angeles County

CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass are fairly active, biting best on live baits and plastic worms. Several limits were recorded and an 8-pound 5-ounce bass caught on a crawdad tops the list. Trout are being caught sporadically.

PYRAMID LAKE--Largemouth and smallmouth bass are striking crankbaits, tube jigs and night crawlers in the shallows. A 16-pound catfish was caught on a night crawler.

Ventura County

LAKE CASITAS--Bass fishing is fair to good, for mostly smaller fish. Ron Briggs, Ojai, 10-15 and 10-2 bass on plastic worms at Santa Ana Arm. Trout are biting on Power Bait at Coyote Arm, but trollers using Needlefish at 30 feet near the dam are doing best. Some red-ear perch.

LAKE PIRU--Trout biting best, especially for slow-trollers using Rapalas and Needlefish at the dam area. Fishing is fair at best, though. Largemouth bass are being caught sporadically off points, with night crawlers, crankbaits and plastic worms.

Santa Barbara County

LAKE CACHUMA--Fishing is fair overall, mostly for trout (night crawlers and Needlefish) and bass (dark plastic worms and crankbaits). Some red-ear perch.

Orange County

IRVINE LAKE--Heavy trout plants should make for a productive weekend. Fishing should be fair to good early, tapering off during the day. Night crawlers, Rapalas and Power Bait have been working best. Bass, crappies and catfish are in the mix too. An 8-5 bass was caught on a Bassmaster at Red Clay Cliffs.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--There is no limit on the number of trout and fishing is fair to good early. One angler tallied 31 trout totaling 60 pounds, using red salmon eggs in the middle of the lake. Bass fishing is fair. Catch-and-release permits to fish for them are $8. Catfish will be stocked next Friday.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--Heavy trout plants this week should boost the action. Several fish were weighed in at 10 pounds or more.

Riverside County

CORONA LAKE--Trout, catfish and crappies are biting. The focus is on trout, however, and fishing is fair early for fish to about 10 pounds.

LAKE PERRIS--Bass fishing is fair at the east end. Plastic worms have been getting fish averaging two-four pounds. Trout are being caught mostly by trollers going deep with Needlefish.

LAKE SKINNER--Largemouth bass are fairly active, biting on crankbaits and plastic worms. Darker colors are best. Striped bass are biting sporadically on swimbaits and anchovies. Some trout.

San Diego County

LAKE CUYAMACA--Trout and crappies are providing the most action, but fishing is fair at best. Catfish are biting sporadically on night crawlers, especially at the south end.

DIXON LAKE--Trout fishing is best, with fish to about six pounds biting mainly for trollers fishing at slow speeds and fairly deep. Bass fishing is just as good and a 17-pounder caught on an unnamed lure tops the list.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Bass fishing remains excellent at San Vicente, where a 10-pounder caught on a crawdad tops the list. Bass fishing is fair at the other lakes. Crappie action is steady at El Capitan. Trout are being caught at Miramar and Murray, but the season is nearing an end.

LAKE WHOLFORD--Trout fishing had improved before the heat wave. A 5-5 trout caught on white and rainbow Power Bait tops the list. Bass fishing is fair to good and one 10-14 caught on a crawdad tops the list. Crappie action is fair on green and white mini-jigs.

Eastern Sierra

Saturday is opening day and all accessible waters have been heavily stocked by the Department of Fish and Game. Selected waters have been stocked by Tim Alpers. They include streams between Big Pine and Lone Pine, with one- to 1 1/2-pound fish; Pleasant Valley Reservoir, Convict Lake and Bishop Creek (all with fish to about seven pounds). Tim Alpers’ stocking schedule kicks into high gear just before Memorial Day weekend. Those wanting to drop a line today might try Pleasant Valley Reservoir, which is open year-round. Float-tubers using a variety of flies and lures have been logging double-digit scores.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--13 anglers (1 boat): 4 barracuda, 10 rockfish, 1 golden croaker.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--47 anglers (4 boats): 5 opal eye, 18 perch, 25 whitefish, 5 sheephead, 1 sand bass, 70 rockfish, 141 red snapper, 2 ling cod, 6 calico bass, 39 barracuda.

PORT HUENEME--33 anglers (2 boats): 137 rockfish, 3 barracuda, 1 ling cod, 1 whitefish, 5 sculpin, 1 sheephead.

MARINA DEL REY--63 anglers (4 boats): 31 sand bass, 1 halibut, 12 sand dabs, 106 rockfish.

REDONDO BEACH--37 anglers (2 boats): 38 sculpin, 57 whitefish, 3 sand bass, 110 rockfish, 1 red snapper.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--42 anglers (3 boats): 80 blue perch, 47 calico bass, 19 sheephead, 22 whitefish, 35 yellowfin croaker, 5 barracuda, 3 sargo, 3 halibut. (22nd St. Landing)--103 anglers (5 boats): 10 white sea bass, 40 calico bass, 43 barracuda, 18 halibut, 61 sculpin, 20 sheephead, 48 whitefish, 270 rockfish, 190 red snapper, 1 yellowfin croaker.

LONG BEACH (Sportfishing/Berth 55)--58 anglers (3 boats): 5 yellowtail, 25 white sea bass, 39 calico bass, 126 rockfish, 30 white fish, 43 sheephead, 12 sculpin, 18 salmon grouper, 168 blue perch. (Pierpoint Landing)--79 anglers (3 boats): 4 barracuda, 58 calico bass, 159 rockfish, 82 whitefish, 10 sculpin, 31 sheephead, 160 perch, 4 halibut.
