First Season Was a Real X-periment

Share

The XFL just wrapped up its first season. I believe it was a successful venture. I know sportswriters and late-night comedians thought it was a big flop, but I don’t see it that way. Maybe the TV ratings slipped because people were expecting something different, but it was nothing more than smash-mouth football.

I enjoyed watching players from major college teams play for rent money. These players would try their hardest each game just to get a $2,000 bonus for winning. There were no million-dollar crybabies.

I was able to see a game at the Coliseum with my son and we had a great time. I look forward to another season of the XFL, and I hope NBC doesn’t pull the plug on it. Watching the XFL is one of the few chances we have of observing athletes playing for the love of the game and not for the future opportunity to fatten their wallets.

Congratulations to the Xtreme on capturing the inaugural XFL title. However, given the current state of the league and apparent level of fan interest, their championship brings to mind an old “Honeymooners” bit:

Ralph: I’m the boss, Alice!! You’re nothing! Did you hear me, Alice? I said I’m the boss and you’re nothing!

Alice: Big deal, Ralph. You’re the boss of nothing.

The scoreboard reads: 0:00 on the clock. Times 56, XFL 3. (One of your political writers said something nice about it in a recent article.) But you’re still piling on in the Morning Briefings and acting like a total drubbing isn’t enough. The masses won’t support what the mass media, through omission or derision, says isn’t cool. You won. Why don’t you give it a rest now?
