Marriott to Eliminate Energy Surcharge

Marriott International Inc. said it will remove a 5-month-old energy surcharge at its hotels “very shortly,” because energy costs have begun to moderate.

The decision follows a similar move by rival Hyatt Hotels Corp. about three weeks ago.

The nation’s major hotel companies introduced energy surcharges at their California properties in March to offset the state’s then-spiraling power costs. About a month later they expanded the charges, which range from about $2 to $5 a night, to other markets where power prices also had spiked.
