Suit Alleges Flaws in Spotted Owl Protection

A coalition of environmental groups filed a lawsuit accusing the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service of failing to protect the spotted owl in California’s Sierra Nevada.
Filed in U.S. District Court here, the suit seeks to force federal officials to determine if the spotted owl and the Pacific fisher, a weasel, should be listed under the Endangered Species Act--a move that could sharply reduce logging.
