Dinosaur Footprints Fished From Reservoir
Volunteer divers recovered most of the dinosaur footprints that were thought to be lost forever after three Boy Scouts tossed the rocks into a reservoir.
“We’re all pretty tickled about it,” said Michael Weyland, a dive shop operator who found the rocks at Red Fleet State Park near Vernal, Utah.
On July 19, a park ranger saw three 15-year-old Scouts pry loose the 190-million-year-old rocks and toss them into the water.
About 90% of the lost footprints were recovered.
The park has about 300 dinosaur tracks preserved in sandstone. The damaged footprints were in a rare track of a 12-foot carnivore.
The boys got juvenile citations for defacing natural resources.
