L.A. Schools Report Card / Grade 10

* UNDERSTANDING THE NUMBERS / READING THE TABLES

In California, nearly 4.5 million public school students in grades 2 through 11 took the Stanford 9 standardized tests in the spring, for the fourth year in a row. All of them were tested in reading, math and language skills such as grammar and punctuation. Students through eighth grade also took a spelling test, and students in higher grades took exams in science and history/social science. For the first time, students in fourth and seventh grades also took writing exams.

On Wednesday, the California Department of Education released scores for nearly 8,000 public schools.

Readers who want to know how a school in Los Angeles County is doing can use this cross section of scores as a gauge. But bear in mind that these are results for individual grades only, not the entire school. Scores can vary from grade to grade--and from classroom to classroom--even at the same school.

Results for all grades, schools and districts will be available on the Internet at https://star.cde.ca.gov.

TO FIND YOUR SCHOOL’S SCORES:

* Look first for the grade level: “Grade 4” for elementary school, “Grade 8” for middle school or “Grade 10” for high school.

* Search down the column to find your school district. Schools are listed underneath in alphabetical order.

* The scores are to the right of your school’s name. The columns report 2001 testing data for reading and math and the change in each of those subjects from 1998, the first year of the test. Use the guide at the top of each column of numbers to determine which category the score is in. (For information about how sizable subgroups of students did school by school or district by district, see star.cde.ca.gov. Data there are broken out by socioeconomic status, race, sex and other categories.)

* For each test, the chart shows the percentage of students in each school who scored at or above the 50th percentile, the national average. The change indicates the gain or loss in the percentage of students at that level.

* The columns at far right reflect the performance of students on test questions matching California’s standards in English and language arts. The first of those, labeled Std. Abv., indicates the percentage of students deemed by the State Board of Education to be “proficient” or “advanced” on those items. A student who scores as proficient or above is considered to be in no need of special educational assistance beyond the regular classroom program. The second column gives the percentage of students considered to be “below basic” or “far below basic.” Those students are considered to be in need of intensive assistance that might very well go beyond what they get in the classroom. The standards exam included 90 questions.

Note: * (an asterisk) means the number of students tested was 10 or fewer.

* COMPARISONS

You might want to compare your school’s average with that of your entire district, Los Angeles County or the state. These scores indicate the percentage of students at or above the national average for the state and L.A. County:

* Grade 4

Reading: State: 47%, L.A. County: 38%

Math: State: 54%, L.A. County: 47%

* Grade 8

Reading: State: 50%, L.A. County: 41%

Math: State: 49%, L.A. County: 40%

* Grade 10

Reading: State: 34%, L.A. County: 28%

Math: State: 45%, L.A. County: 39%

How to Read the Scores

Reading 2001: Percentage of students scoring at or above the national average on the 2001 Stanford 9 test. A 50 means that half the school’s students were at or above the national average.

Reading Change: Change from 1998’s percentage of students scoring at or above the national average. (When 1998 comparisons were unavailable--for example, with a new school--1999 data were used, if available.)

Math 2001: Percentage of students scoring at or above the national average on the 2001 Stanford 9 test.

Math Change: Change from 1998’s percentage of students scoring at or above the national average. (When 1998 comparisons were unavailable--for example, with a new school--1999 data were used, if available.)

Standard Above: Percentage of students whose scores on questions relating to California’s English and language arts standards were deemed “proficient” or “advanced.”

Advertisement

Standard Below: Percentage of students whose scores on the English and language arts standards questions were considered “below basic” or “far below basic.”

For more information, see first page of tables.

Note to Readers

Under a new state law, the Long Beach Unified School District tested a significant number of students at year-round schools later than is typical. As a result, the district’s data will not be available until Sept. 15
