Self-Realization Fellowship to Host World Event

The Self-Realization Fellowship will host its 2001 World Convocation beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday and continuing through 1 p.m. Aug. 25. The weeklong event will focus on the teachings of the organization’s founder, Paramahansa Yogananda. Monks and nuns from the fellowship’s monastic community will host discussions and lectures on yoga techniques, divine friendships, the relationship between science and religion, and the cultivation of a deeper faith. Participants will be able to view videos on Paramahansa Yogananda’s life that include archival footage of his beginnings with the fellowship in 1950. The event will take place in the California Ballroom at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel, 404 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles. EVENTS

Beth Chayim Chadashim will hold a book reading and slide show from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday at 6000 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles. The event will feature writer Leah Lax reading “Berkeh’s Story” and Robert Levy reading “Ana Pauker: The Rise and Fall of a Jewish Communist.” The focus of the slide show will be on the Mikvah Project, a touring exhibit of photographs and interviews documenting the resurgence of the Jewish ritual of immersion in a mikvah. Kosher-style pizza will be served beginning at 6 p.m. Admission for the slide show and pizza dinner is $10 for members, $18 for nonmembers. (323) 931-7023.

* St. Charles Borromeo Church will hold a Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults class from 7 to 9 p.m. Aug. 28 at 10834 Moorpark St., North Hollywood. * Temple Ahavat Shalom will celebrate its sixth annual talent show and bistro at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at 18200 Rinaldi Place, Northridge. The event will feature entertainment by members of the congregation and a bistro menu. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for children under 12. (818) 360-2258.

CONCERTS

Culver-Palms United Methodist Church will present Summerfest 2001 from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Telefson Park, 11100 Washington Place, Culver City. This Christian music festival will include performances by Jim and Jean Strathdee, the Eternal Flame Praise Band, Sage, Jonathan Nelson and Narrow Intercession.
