Rome Adopts Baby of Illegal Immigrant
Rome’s city hall said it was taking responsibility for the care of a 2-month-old Nigerian girl who has become a symbol of the dark side of illegal immigration in Italy.
The girl was found early Friday lying naked next to her dead mother, a 28-year-old HIV-positive drug addict who had died of a heroin overdose in a hostel on the outskirts of Rome. The child is also drug-addicted and HIV-positive.
Rome’s deputy mayor visited the baby in the hospital and said afterward that her case should spur people to realize the responsibility they have for the welfare of everyone in their community.
