Fishermen’s Families File Suit After Collision
The widows of two fishermen killed in an at-sea collision off Massachusetts have sued a Russian company for $6 million each.
The Russian company operates a tanker that allegedly rammed the fishermen’s boat. The lawsuits, filed by the widow and children of James Sanfilippo, of Thomaston, Maine, and Carol Doughty, the widow of Mark Doughty, of Yarmouth, Maine, were filed in Canadian federal court in St. John’s, Newfoundland.
The tanker Virgo allegedly sank the Starbound, an 83-foot fishing boat, on Aug. 5. Only the captain, James Marcantonio of Gloucester, Mass., survived.
The lawsuit alleges that the Virgo crew failed to keep a proper lookout and offer help.
