Vietnam Ambassador Choice Is Expected
The White House announced that President Bush intends to nominate Raymond Burghardt to be the next ambassador to Vietnam.
Burghardt is a senior career foreign service officer and has served as director of the American Institute of Taiwan in Taipei since 1999.
If confirmed by the Senate, he would succeed Douglas “Pete” Peterson. Burghardt has served in a variety of other posts in Asia, including principal officer in Shanghai from 1997 to 1999, deputy chief of mission in Manila from 1993 to 1996 and deputy chief of mission in Seoul from 1990 to 1993.
