The United Auto Workers said Sunday they have tentatively agreed to end a strike against Mitsubishi Motor Corp.’s plant in Illinois.

The strike that began Friday morning was the first work stoppage by the union against an auto maker in nearly four years.

“UAW Local 2488 members overwhelmingly approved the tentative agreement with Mitsubishi Motors Manufacturing of America,” the UAW said in a news release. It said 83% of the 2,200 members who voted approved ratification of the agreement. The UAW did not give details of the pact.

The two sides had been negotiating over a contract since June 20. The UAW’s last strike against an auto maker was a 1998 dispute with General Motors Corp., although it did stage minor walkouts during contract negotiations with auto makers in 1999.

The UAW said all third-shift Mitsubishi employees would report Sunday night at their regularly scheduled shift start.

The plant here builds the Eclipse coupe and convertible as well as two models of coupes for the Chrysler side of DaimlerChrysler. Last year it built 222,036 cars. DaimlerChrysler owns a 34% stake in Mitsubishi.
