Congress Clears Way for More Fujimori Charges
Peru’s Congress voted unanimously to charge disgraced former President Alberto Fujimori with responsibility for two massacres by an army death squad in the early 1990s. The government said the move will boost the chances of forcing his return from Japan to stand trial for alleged crimes against humanity.
Fujimori, who ruled Peru with an iron fist from 1990 to 2000, has previously been charged only with dereliction of duty.
In a special session, Congress voted 75 to 0 to lift Fujimori’s constitutional immunity so that prosecutors can charge him with homicide and forced disappearances.
The attorney general’s office is required to file the charges within five days.
