Efforts Delayed to Block Plutonium Shipments

A week after threatening to lie down in front of trucks to stop shipments of plutonium to the state, Gov. Jim Hodges said he would hold talks with the federal government and postpone roadblock exercises.
Hodges wants a binding agreement from the U.S. Energy Department on when shipments of the radioactive metal will arrive and when they will leave.
The state and federal government had agreed to begin bringing plutonium in October to the Savannah River Site, where it would be converted into fuel or immobilized for storage in Nevada.
