Custody Quandary

Share

Throughout “Custody Dispute Over Thai Boy, 4, Is Riddled With Cultural Tensions” (Aug. 26), I kept looking for the facts about the human smuggling incident that would implicate the felonious grandmother. They do not exist. Instead, the article conveys the impression that Americans are entitled to seize and hold minor dependents of foreign nationals whenever our government determines that our health care system would provide more or better medical services than they could get at home.

Parents, and even grandparents--whether they farm mushrooms or have prison records--surely do not lose their status as guardians of right simply because they come from a nonindustrial nation. Elian Gonzalez went home; so should Got Khaisri. Any other result would be the height of arrogance.
