Ahmanson Ranch Development

Rob Reiner has every right to disagree with our position that the Ahmanson Ranch is an environmentally responsible development that will help address this region’s critical housing shortage.

To assert, however, that after 15 years of hearings, studies and community meetings that “the truth” is being hidden is offensive to us and to the many local, state and federal agencies reviewing this project.

Unfortunately, Mr. Reiner appears to be woefully short on facts and seems intent on remaining so.

He did not participate in the public review process, which produced the environmental impact report, and he turned down several offers to meet with us to discuss the development and educate himself about the project before throwing his support behind a campaign to stop it.

We had hoped that a “celebrity,” as Mr. Reiner described himself in his letter to The Times, would feel a greater responsibility to understand the issues--including the need to balance environmental concerns with the needs of people.

Mr. Reiner, who has been associated with many admirable causes in the past, seems to have joined the ranks of opponents who are unwilling to distinguish between environmental rhetoric and environmental reality.

Ultimately, we are confident that the public officials who have responsibility to review the Ahmanson Ranch will base their decisions on fact, not fiction.
