FIRST QUARTER

Share

UCLA 14, Arizona State 7

THE SCORING: * Arizona State: Tom Pace, 42-yard run at 13:03. 80-yard drive, five plays. PAT--Mike Barth (kick). * UCLA: Akil Harris, two-yard run at 11:31. 64-yard drive, four plays. PAT--Chris Griffith (kick). * UCLA: Manuel White, eight-yard run at 7:58. 61-yard drive, 10 plays. PAT--Griffith (kick).

TURNING POINT: After taking the opening kickoff, Arizona State had no trouble moving on the Bruin defense. Andrew Walter passed to Shaun McDonald for 16 yards and Delvon Flowers had a 14-yard run. On second down at the UCLA 42, Pace went up the middle, broke to his left and scored easily. But the momentum changed quickly. On the second play after the kickoff, UCLA’s Harris took a pitch, burst up the middle and ran 50 yards before being brought down at the three. Harris scored two plays later.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Arizona State appeared to get a few breaks the next time UCLA had the ball. The Bruins tried a trick play on second down from their 48, with Scott McEwan pitching to Craig Bragg, who had Matt Stanley wide open downfield. But Bragg’s pass did not reach Stanley. Later, a pass-interference flag against Arizona State in the end zone was picked up because the pass from McEwan was ruled not catchable. And then UCLA’s Griffith missed a 34-yard field-goal attempt wide right. But a personal foul on Arizona State on the field-goal try gave the Bruins a first down at the eight, and on the next play, White broke two tackles and scored.

STAT WATCH: Arizona State’s Pace had 62 yards after his first two carries and would have had 81 after three carries but a holding penalty knocked 10 yards off a 19-yard run. UCLA’s Harris had 75 yards in eight carries in the first quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

UCLA 24, Arizona State 14

THE SCORING: * UCLA: Bragg, 62-yard pass from McEwan at 13:37. 75-yard drive, five plays. PAT--Griffith (kick). * UCLA: Griffith, 28-yard field goal at 4:30. 25-yard drive, eight plays. * Arizona State: Flowers, two-yard run at :42. 13-yard drive, two plays. PAT--Barth (kick).

TURNING POINT: The quarter started well for the Bruins. On second and eight from their 38, McEwan side-stepped one defender and got off a long pass just as he was being hit by Arizona State’s Riccardo Stewart. Bragg caught the pass in full stride at around the 10 and completed a 62-yard scoring play. The Bruins continued to dominate until late in the half, when Arizona State defensive tackle Tommie Townsend intercepted a McEwan pass and returned it 15 yards to the UCLA 13. Flowers gained 11 yards, then scored on the next play, and the Sun Devils were within 10 at halftime.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: The Bruins had a good chance to take a 28-7 lead after picking up a first down on a fake field-goal try. On fourth and two at the Arizona State 28, holder Garrett Lepisto passed to fullback Ed Ieremia-Stansbury for 19 yards. The Bruins got to the one on a five-yard run by Ieremia-Stansbury, but a holding penalty put them back to the 11 and they had to settle for a field goal.

STAT WATCH: McEwan completed eight of 17 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown in the first half, with one interception. Arizona State’s Walter was seven for 13 for 77 yards with one interception.

THIRD QUARTER

THE SCORING: * UCLA: Stanley, five-yard run at 10:17. 22-yard drive, four plays. PAT--Griffith (kick). * Arizona State: Pace, 100-yard kickoff return at 9:55. PAT--Barth (kick). * UCLA: White, nine-yard run at 5:57. 67-yard drive, 10 plays. PAT--Griffith (kick). * UCLA: Bragg, 39-yard pass from McEwan. 47-yard drive, three plays. PAT--Griffith (kick).

TURNING POINT: Arizona State forced UCLA to punt on its first possession of the second half, but on the third play of its first possession, Walter went back to pass and was sacked by Kenyon Coleman, who knocked the ball loose. UCLA’s Ryan Nece recovered at the Sun Devil 22, and four plays later, Stanley steamed in from the five.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: A 100-yard kickoff return touchdown by Pace momentarily gave Arizona State some life, but UCLA came right back with an impressive scoring drive, capped by White’s nine-yard run. UCLA scored again later in the third quarter on a pass play that was run to perfection. McEwan faked a handoff to Harris, dropped back and dropped the ball into the outstretched arms of Bragg, who had gotten behind the defense.

STAT WATCH: McEwan was 16 for 28 for 230 yards and two touchdowns through three quarters, and Bragg had seven catches for 138 yards and both passing touchdowns.

FOURTH QUARTER

UCLA 52, Arizona State 42

THE SCORING: * Arizona State: Mike Williams, 59-yard run at 13:35. 80-yard drive, four plays. PAT--Barth (kick). * UCLA: Ieremia-Stansbury, two-yard pass from McEwan at 9:18. 76-yard drive, 12 plays. PAT--Griffith (kick). * Arizona State: Justin Taplin, 18-yard pass from Walter at 6:53. 80-yard drive, seven plays. PAT--Barth (kick). * Arizona State, Ryan Dennard, two-yard pass from Walter at :04. 62-yard drive, 10 plays. PAT--Barth (kick).

TURNING POINT: Williams’ 59-yard touchdown run got Arizona State back within 10, but UCLA came right back. A short pass to tight end Mike Seidman on third down resulted in a first down and two plays later McEwan passed to tight end Bryan Fletcher for 39 yards to set up another touchdown.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: UCLA, faced with fourth and two at the Arizona State 32, failed to pick up a first down when tailback Ken Pritchett was stopped short. That enabled Arizona State to run off one more scoring drive and finish with some pretty big numbers.
