Regarding the congressional probe of the failure of Enron, the Texas energy company near bankruptcy (Nov. 30): I thought buying and selling contracts in a commodity without owning same, which was to a large extent its business, was essentially making a futures market, something that is subject to government regulation. Bankruptcies have their positive side. In the case of the financial collapse of Enron, the finest minds on free-market economics and the benefits of deregulation in the Republican Party will be freed from their commercial labors and available to go to Washington to help guide policy on the privatization of Social Security and other grossly inefficient government programs.
