WAR FRONT

Americans killed: Three U.S. Green Berets are killed and 20 others are wounded in the battle to seize the southern Afghan city of Kandahar when a U.S. bomber drops a 2,000-pound “smart” bomb about 100 yards away, in the first deadly “friendly fire” incident to befall U.S. troops in the war, Pentagon officials say.

DIPLOMACY

Sharing power: Moving to heal their ruined and fractious country, Afghans sign an accord in Germany to create a multiethnic government in which a triumphant military force, the Northern Alliance, will share power with an array of rivals that excludes the all-but-vanquished Taliban. Their landmark deal calls for an interim council to govern Afghanistan for six months starting Dec. 22.

HOME FRONT

Aid for Hamas: A prominent Islamic charity raises $207,000 at a 1995 Los Angeles event at which the keynote speaker exhorts the crowd to “Finish off the Israelis. Kill them all,” according to an FBI memo. The account is contained in a 49-page FBI document that the U.S. used to support this week’s decision to freeze the assets of Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development.
