The buzz over the video game console wars has erupted into a roar. Yet even the most avid video game enthusiasts might be reluctant to pick up more than one Microsoft Xbox. After all, the things cost $299 each.

But they still want to be able to play some of the Xbox’s hottest titles, including “Halo,” with their friends.

As a stopgap, GameSpy Industries in Irvine is offering a software program that lets players link their Xbox to the Net--and network their friends into an Xbox game.

The software is free on a trial basis, or $20 for permanent use.
