Billboard Politics

City Atty. Rocky Delgadillo benefited from $429,000 from the billboard companies in his race against Mike Feuer. It was all very legal as independent expenditures (“Delgadillo Treads a Political Tightrope,” Dec. 5).
Delgadillo claimed repeatedly during the campaign that he would not be beholden to the billboard companies. But using a Supreme Court ruling in a somewhat related case, he jumps in to repeal the relatively weak billboard law and buys the space for anti-smoking ads.
Delgadillo did not recuse himself but proposes to reward his “independent supporters” with more business. This is all in accord with how contact politics is played. The moral of the story is, do not vote for names on billboards!
