Do Research When Seeking Doctor, Avoid Emergency Room
- Share via
Regardless of the precautions you take, there still may be times when you get sick and need medical care while you are traveling.
In the United States, finding a doctor is rarely difficult. You can always start by asking friends or family members who live near your destination for a recommendation. Or contact a local hospital and request the names and phone numbers of their staff physicians.
Try to avoid using an emergency room if your problem is not really an emergency. The costs can be extremely high, and the visit may not be covered by your insurance policy.
In foreign countries, one of the best referral sources for English-speaking doctors is the International Assn. for Medical Assistance to Travelers.
This organization will provide you with a list of well-trained doctors around the world who are willing to care for travelers. Membership in the organization is free (go to www.iamat.org), but donations are welcomed (and encouraged). If you do not have Internet access, call (716) 754-4883
In addition, many hotels maintain a list of physicians to which they can refer their guests, and some have a doctor on call.
