Walt Disney Co.’s Internet arm, Disney Internet Group, said Tuesday that it will provide content to wireless telephone customers of South Korea’s SK Telecom, marking the latest deal in Disney Internet’s recent aggressive overseas expansion.
Starting early next year, the Disney Mobile service will be offered on SK Telecom’s Internet portal service. Content will be accessible via SK Telecom’s service for both mobile handsets and desktops.
The agreement was the fifth for Disney Internet and an Asian wireless telecommunications company in the last three months.
On Nov. 8, the Disney unit announced its first such deal in Europe when it agreed to provide content to British, German and Austrian customers of P-Motion, a unit of Deutsche Telekom.
Before the recent spate of deals, Disney Internet also agreed last year to provide content to users of NTT DoCoMo’s wireless phone service in Japan.
In Japan, Disney Internet has more than 2 million subscribers who pay 79 cents to $2.38 a month for such services as distinctive dial tones and games that can be played on cell phones, said Disney Internet spokeswoman Kim Kerscher.
