Strike Authorized by Mechanics at United

United Airlines mechanics voted to go on strike after two years of negotiations failed to produce a contract, the union said. A walkout would not be legally allowed until Feb. 21, though.
A spokesman for the International Assn. of Machinists said 99% of the nearly 10,000 votes cast supported a strike.
A United spokesman said the company does not expect any disruption of service as a result of the vote. He said no negotiations are scheduled and that he didn’t know when the two sides might sit down again. The mechanics received their last raise in 1994.
Shares of UAL Corp., United’s parent company, fell 49 cents to $14.72 on the New York Stock Exchange.
