Re “Civil Rights Chief Shows Equality in Bedeviling Critics,” Dec. 12: As a former U.S. Commission on Civil Rights staff member (for 18 years) I knew Arthur Flemming, and Mary Frances Berry is no Arthur Flemming. How dare she use him as her defense! He insisted on the commission’s independence as a tool to achieve equal opportunity for all, not as a platform for personal agendas. The objectivity and integrity of his commission are gone.
