David Bowie Quits Virgin Records

Share

Saying he is frustrated with “corporate structure,” rock star David Bowie said Sunday he quit his longtime record label Virgin Records and created his own independent music company.

The move comes after executives at Virgin’s British parent EMI Group, Bowie’s home for nearly two decades, missed an opportunity to extend his contract for two more albums, according to sources. Bowie, whose recent albums have lacked the commercial punch of his 1980s hits, is expected to release his next record through his label, ISO. Representatives for EMI could not be reached for comment Sunday.
