Rep. Nancy Pelosi, soon to be the second-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives, withdrew her endorsement Wednesday of embattled Rep. Gary Condit’s reelection bid.

“I have informed Congressman Condit that I will be neutral in this primary race,” said Pelosi, who will assume the post of Democratic whip next month.

In declaring her neutrality in the 18th Congressional District’s March primary, the San Francisco Democrat aligned herself with other party leaders who have refused to back the seven-term incumbent.

Her announcement earlier this week that she would support Condit upset some Democrats who want the party to distance itself from the Ceres lawmaker because of his involvement with missing intern Chandra Levy.
