Ira Einhorn, an international fugitive for two decades after being accused of killing his girlfriend, will get a court-appointed lawyer for his new murder trial because he says he is broke.

Einhorn, 61, told Common Pleas Judge D. Webster Keough on Wednesday that he had not earned a paycheck in more than 20 years. He said he had no real estate or bank accounts, and no assets jointly held with his wife, who comes from a wealthy family.

The judge said he would appoint a lawyer within 10 days.

Einhorn, a flamboyant poet-philosopher in the 1970s, is charged in the 1977 death of Holly Maddux, whose mummified body was found in a trunk in the couple’s apartment.

He fled just before his scheduled 1981 trial and lived under pseudonyms in England, Ireland and Sweden. He was convicted in absentia in 1993.

Einhorn was found in 1997 in France, where officials refused to extradite foreigners based on trials in absentia. He was returned after Pennsylvania passed a law allowing a retrial at Einhorn’s request.
