Mother and Child
Times photographer Brian Walski’s image of an Afghan mother holding her starving child overwhelmed me emotionally (Dec. 18, Page A2). Although the woman is completely shrouded in the traditional burka, we can only imagine the incomprehensible grief that her veiled face must reflect. This photograph has striking parallels to Michelangelo’s sculpture, La Pieta, which gives us the image of another grieving mother holding her dying child 2,000 years ago.
