2 Top Ex-Communists Face Treason Trial
Two former top Communist Party officials have been charged with treason for their alleged roles in the 1968 Soviet-led invasion that crushed democratic reforms.
Milos Jakes, former secretary-general of the Czechoslovak Communist Party, and Jozef Lenart, Czechoslovak prime minister in the 1960s and head of the Slovak Communist Party until 1988, face prison terms of 12 to 15 years if convicted, said Martin Omelkia, spokesman for the Prague prosecutor.
Jakes, 79, and Lenart, 78, are accused of trying to form a new government loyal to the Soviet Union to legalize the invasion.
