Physics Institute Gets $7.5-Million Donation

Businessman Fred Kavli has donated $7.5 million to UC Santa Barbara to create a permanent endowment for the university’s Institute for Theoretical Physics.
The donation by Kavli, who owned Kavlico in Moorpark before its sale in 2000, was completed this week. It will fund a 7,500-square-foot addition to Kohn Hall, which is named after Walter Kohn, the center’s founding director and winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in chemistry.
The added space is needed; administrators routinely have to turn away scholars who apply to participate in the institute’s programs.
