Ed Salem, 72, an All-American at the University of Alabama who played a memorable game against Auburn when the two schools revived the series in 1948, died Wednesday in Birmingham, Ala., of complications from diabetes.
Salem went on to briefly play for the Washington Redskins, and for Montreal of the Canadian Football League. He also was the longtime owner of a popular Birmingham restaurant called Ed Salem’s.
When Alabama and Auburn renewed their series in 1948 after 42 years, Salem led the Crimson Tide to a 55-0 win over the Tigers. Salem threw touchdown passes of 20, 53 and 30 yards, scored on a 17-yard run, kicked seven extra points and played safety on defense.
