* Notes: Woods won the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach in June, finishing with a tournament-record 12-under 272 total and a major championship-record 15-stroke margin. He tied for fifth in the Phoenix Open, extending his tour winless streak to five. His streak of 52 tour rounds of par or better was snapped with a second-round 73. He might not be able to play because of a knee injury suffered after a practice round Wednesday. . . . Mark O’Meara won the 1997 tournament for his record fifth title, shooting four 67s for a tournament-record 268 total. . . . The final round will be played at Pebble Beach. . . . The Buick Invitational is next week at Torrey Pines.

* Last week: Hale Irwin, given a second chance when Jack Nicklaus birdied No. 18, made a three-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to win the Senior Skins Game in Hawaii. Irwin finished with $320,000.

* Notes: Under the scoring system, players receive 8 points for double eagle, 5 for eagle, 2 for birdie, 0 for par, minus-1 for bogey and minus-3 for double bogey or higher. . . . Bob Gilder is making his first senior start. The six-time PGA Tour winner won the qualifying school. He turned 50 on Dec. 31. . . . Zimbabwe’s Mark McNulty edged England’s Justin Rose by a stroke in the South African Open. McNulty, 47, is the third oldest winner in European tour history.

* Notes: Australian star Greg Norman is in the field along with 20-year-old countryman Adam Scott and England’s Nick Faldo. Scott won the Alfred Dunhill Championship two weeks ago in South Africa for his first pro title. Faldo tied for third in the Dunhill. . . .
