Chevalier Says He’ll Be Back for More

Andre Chevalier is having such a good time in his second turn as boys’ basketball coach at Cleveland High that he has decided to remove the interim label.

Chevalier, who took over the team on Jan. 18 after the resignation of Adam Levitt, has guided the Cavaliers to a 2-2 record.

Considering they were 1-14 before his arrival, Chevalier has already made a positive impact.

“The guys are responding well, playing hard, coming together as a team,” he said.

Chevalier was serving as a dean at Cleveland while working on his master’s degree after resigning as an assistant coach at Cal State Northridge. He was hired to replace Levitt but initially didn’t commit to coach beyond this season.

“I was planning on going back to coaching in a year,” he said. “What better place to be than Cleveland? I’m going to do it.”

Chevalier plans to build future teams around freshman point guard Dominic Lewis, who he promoted from the junior varsity. The Cavaliers have won two of the three games Lewis has started.

With only a week left in the regular season, two critical league showdowns are tonight.

In the Mission League, Notre Dame (18-5, 6-3) plays at Crespi (17-5, 7-2).

In the West Valley League, Taft (17-5, 6-1) plays at Chatsworth (15-7, 6-1).

Notre Dame and Taft won close games over their rivals in the first meetings.
