There Was Nobody Like Al McGuire

Share

Al McGuire gave me my favorite memories of college basketball. When a reporter asked McGuire if his son Allie would start for Marquette, Al answered, “Of course, he’ll start. He’s my son.” He gave the nickname “Shoes” to a player on Michigan State’s 1979 championship team because the young man’s shoes came off several times in the tournament. Magic Johnson may be more famous, but I still remember “Shoes.”

Al happily danced a jig with the Syracuse Orangemen after they made it to the Final Four in 1996. When Al announced a game, I was entertained and informed because he loved the game and respected the players. Thank you, Coach, and Godspeed.

There were not many things better in the history of sports television than watching an NCAA tournament game with Al McGuire, along with Dick Enberg and Billy Packer.

When Coach Majerus is through on the court, he ought to beat a path to the press room. This kid can write.
