Ving Reveals a Softer Side at Key Club

Share

In the words of Randy Newman, I love L.A. When you hit these streets running at night, you never know what you’re going to see, whom you’re going to meet or where the night will take you. Last week at the Key Club, por ejemplo, I saw the softer side of Lee Ving. The longtime Fear front-man, one of the angriest young men to ever form a punk band, performed an acoustic set in the Sunset Strip club’s plush VIP lounge. By the time he got to a cover of the Beatles’ “We Can Work It Out,” there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Truly, life is very short. . . . At the new Club Strut Fridays at the Cat Club the Fast Times house band doing live karaoke brought out the Billy Idol in all of us. You know, it’s always a nice day for a white wedding. . . . Speaking of white weddings, Mammoth Records President Robert Seidenberg is marrying his longtime sweetheart, artist Wendy Harte, in Massachusetts this June. I’m soooo there. . . . Poked my head into Cherry at Vynyl and what to my eyes did appear? Bryan Rabin’s new mullet and six shiny reindeer. Actually, I made up the reindeer part, but I did see some road-warrior bugs wearing blinking lights en route to Cherry. Turns out the zany pests are a psychedelic surf band called Insecto, which was passing out gig flyers and bubble gum on the Sunset Strip. That’s the spirit. . . . Snuggled my way into a power pow-wow at the Latin Lounge, where owners Cheryl and Art Davis were hosting an impromptu dinner party for such friends as producer Maxine Taupin and Dr. Mark Saginor, Hugh Hefner’s personal physician. Thank God I was sitting next the good doc cuz I booked me an appointment for 2040 (in the Grotto, no less). The Davis’ new nightclub at the old La Masia is jumping on Tuesdays, when Dennis Quaid’s band performs. I got to lay some positivity on Quaid, and I spotted one of my head’s resident philosophers, “Kung Fu’s” David Carradine. I still offset panic attacks by practicing a breathing technique I picked up from Kwai Chang Caine back in the day. Did I mention I luv L.A.?
