A Valentine’s Bouquet From U.S. Museums

From the Sun Belt to the Fog Belt, museums are providing plenty for travelers to do indoors this month. A sampling:

* San Francisco: Exhibits from New York’s American Museum of the Moving Image are themselves moving--to San Francisco’s Exploratorium in the Palace of Fine Arts for a show called “Behind the Screen: Making Motion Pictures and Television.” Visitors can create animated films, dub their voices onto film classics and visit a simulated TV broadcast control room. * Dallas: “Henry Moore, Sculpting the 20th Century” is said to be the first U.S. retrospective of the English artist’s work in nearly 20 years. * Portland, Ore.: “Keeping the Spirit Alive” showcases 90 pieces of American Indian art from the private collection of Portland entrepreneur Robert B. Pamplin Jr. It includes horse regalia, clothing and domestic objects from tribes of the Great Plains, Great Basin and Columbia Plateau, as well as works of contemporary Indian artisans. * St. Louis: Are we ready for more Van Gogh? The Saint Louis Art Museum hopes so. Its upcoming show, “Vincent van Gogh and the Painters of the Petit Boulevard,” offers nearly 70 works by the Postimpressionist and some of his contemporaries, including Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
