Lawrence Carter; Navy Veteran, Oxnard Resident

Lawrence “Larry” Carter, a longtime Oxnard resident, died Friday at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard. He was 86.

He was born Oct. 30, 1914, in Spartanburg, S. C., and grew up in the area.

He met his future wife, Lillian, in 1929. They married on March 25, 1935.

His brother encouraged Carter to join the Navy. After enlisting, he was stationed in Virginia and Rhode Island. In 1943, Lawrence and Lillian Carter moved to Oxnard when he was transferred to Port Hueneme with the Seabees.

After the birth of their two sons, Carter worked with contractors to build Lillian’s Beauty Shop on Ventura Boulevard in Oxnard for his wife. She was the owner and beautician there for 28 years.

He began working for People’s Lumber Co. in Camarillo and remained in the lumber business until he retired in 1976.

The couple enjoyed traveling, including trips to Canada and Europe. They went on 13 cruises and once purchased a 30-day train ticket that took them throughout the United States.

Carter was a 44-year member of Elks Lodge No. 1446 in Oxnard and a member of the Ventura Moose Lodge for 17 years.

He enjoyed spending many hours tending to his flower and vegetable garden, and he loved to read.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons Lawrence R. Carter of Oxnard and William Carter of Essex, England, and one granddaughter, Kathryn Shoenfield of Fenton, Mo.

Visitation is scheduled from 3 to 6 p.m. today at Pierce Bros. Griffin Mortuary chapel in Camarillo.

A funeral service is scheduled at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Griffin chapel. Interment will be at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura, followed by a memorial service at the Elks Lodge in Oxnard.
