One of Children’s Hospital of Orange County’s top executives has been named chairwoman of Orange County’s Proposition 10 commission, one of a statewide network of panels established to distribute tobacco tax funds.

“I am grateful to have this honor bestowed on me by fellow commissioners,” said Dr. Maria E. Minon, vice president of CHOC’s medical affairs.

Minon will chair the seven-member Children and Families Commission, which has so far allocated $40.5 million for education, health and child-care programs.

Crystal Kochendorfer, a Capistrano Unified School District board member, was named vice chairwoman. County Supervisor Chuck Smith, the former chairman, will be chairman pro-tem.

The panel was created by the 1998 statewide tobacco initiative that imposed a 50-cent tax on cigarettes and other tobacco products.
